The Snallygaster

Originally called a Schneller Geist by the German immigrants who gave rise to its legend, this “quick ghost” eventually became known as the Snallygaster.

Since the 1700s, the people of rural Frederick County, Maryland in the United States have believed that the Snallygaster, part demon, part chimeric bird, has preyed on livestock and locals.

To this day, painted on the sides of barns throughout the county, one can still see the pentagrams and heptagrams people believed kept the monster at bay.

Some locals also believe that the Snallygaster has been battling for centuries with the Dwayyo, another legend, believed to be an immortal werewolf.
